Our History

Bethany Home Retirement Center, founded in 1923, began as the dream of Reverend Adolph Krebs, who saw the need for a Christian home for older individuals in Galena, Illinois. After his passing, Reverend William C. Laube championed the cause, gaining the support of the Presbyterian Church's Synod of the West.

In 1923, Bethany Home started in the Christian Loetscher home on Lincoln Avenue through the generous gift from his family. Dr. William C. Laube served as the first president of the Board of Trustees.

Over the years, Bethany Home has expanded and modernized its facilities, including a major addition in 1975, doubling occupancy. In 2003, another expansion resulted in new apartment settings and private rooms for nursing care.

In 2011, a three-story addition was opened, featuring a Memory Care Unit, an activity room, and a spacious exercise area.

Bethany Home offers comfortable retirement living with various services, 24/7 staff, and welcomes all faiths. It operates as a non-profit organization affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., led by a dedicated Board of Directors.

We extend our gratitude to the Dubuque Community for their support, enabling us to continue our mission through gifts and bequests.
